Cordoba

We took a day trip to Cordoba to visit el Alcazar, the synagogue and the mezquita/cathedral, where Conso lead us through each site and discussed the significant architectural and stylistic features of each building.

Crossing the bridge to Cordoba.

Cool looking statue...

The courtyard just inside Alcazar.

The outer wall surrounding the palace.

The wall from a slightly different angle...

In the Hall of Mosaics, a mural portraying the face of Medusa.

Another wall mosaic, this one portraying a Cyclops.

This geometric mosaic ran all along the length of one wall.

A Roman sarcophagus featuring the figure of Pegasus carved into the marble.

The front of the sarcophagus.

The baths.

Inside the synagogue.

The gardens just inside the mosque.

The arches are made of red brick and white stone, so the colors are natural.  All of the supporting columns throughout the mezquita are unique, because when the mosque was built they used a lot of materials from nearby Roman ruins.  The decorative tops and the bases of the columns all feature different styles and designs, and some are buried deeper into the ground to match the shorter columns.

A different style of arch.
